Informational Text: Butterfly Close Read

This was by far the best "close read" of  informational text we have done so far! It took TIME to do. The first day we read the text and really got into the juicy vocabulary words. The kids loved it, I am still kind of amazed at how focused they stayed. They loved the phrase "eating machines" ( I related it to my son and his college friends!) and they loved the word "emerged". On the second day we re-read, they had their copy of the text and pointed to read along. We reviewed the vocabulary and discussed the facts that we learned from this particular text. The writing they did was great! It was fun hearing them using those juicy words with their partners as they talked about thier facts that they would be writing! I also overheard some of those juicy words being used at the storytelling center for the Butterfly Life Cycle re-tell!

Butterfly Life Cycle Uncovered!

I am so excited to start our insect unit this week! I have updated my resources and am so excited to put them to work! This week I'll be trying out my new Informational Text Close Reading Activity, I did one this week about ducks that my friend created. {Close Reading ~ Mallard Duck}

The kids did a great job with it, so I'm excited to work on those same close reading skills again this week! We will also be using the story sticks and felt figures for the storytelling center. I love it when science is so easy to integrate with all of the other CC skills we are working on!
I'll take some pictures and let you know how it goes!  :o)

Why we do what we do!

Cutest thing E V E R!!
One of my little guys was at the storytelling center, he walked up to me with the
book Click Clack Moo in his hands, the most excited look on his face and said...
"I readed and it worked! It really worked!"
Then he read me the page he was on, very well I might add! He surprised himself with his
fluency! So darn cute. I felt like I had just watch a kid riding his bike for the first time
with no training wheels! That just never gets old, especially when they say it like that!
